Sofia Orozco of San Marcos Soccer and Carpinteria swimmer Jackson Melton named Athletes of the Week |

Sofia Orozco of the San Marcos women’s football team and Carpinteria swimmer Jackson Melton secured their tickets to the CIF-Southern Section Finals with high-profile performances last week.

The Santa Barbara Sports Roundtable honored student athletes as Athletes of the Week at Monday’s last press luncheon of the 2020-21 school year at Creekside Restaurant.

In an ICF semi-final game, Orozco scored a golden goal in the second 10-minute overtime to give the undefeated Royals a 1-0 victory over South Pasadena and a place in the Division Championship game. 5 Friday against Paraclete. Kick-off is at 5 p.m.

Orozco also won in the quarter-finals. She scored two goals in a 3-3 stalemate at Pasadena-Marshall and converted a penalty kick to a 5-4 victory on penalties to help the Royals advance.

Melton stood out in the pool in the Citrus Coast League final.

The rookie set school records and CIF automatic qualifying times by winning the 200 individual medley (2: 08.7) and the 100 breaststroke (1: 05.57). His victories helped the Warriors win the boys’ tag team championship.

Melton’s 200 IM time is the third fastest qualifying mark for the Division 4 final and her 100 breaststroke time is the fifth fastest.

Men’s Honorable Mention picks include Jacob Snodgress (San Marcos track) and Tyler Williams (Bishop Diego basketball).

Jayla Provance (San Marcos Golf), Ava Carter (San Marcos Track) and Holly Woodhouse (San Marcos Swimming) were the other contenders for the award.
