Zuffelato led the Dons women’s volleyball team to five-set wins over Dos Pueblos and San Marcos in the same week to embark on the championship race. The outside batter had double doubles in both games.

Against DP, Zuffelato made 14 kills and collected 12 digs. She added 14 more kills and 11 digs in the victory at San Marcos.

In revenge for defeats in the first round against his rivals, Santa Barbara found himself tied for second place in the Channel League with San Marcos.

Gamberdella, a senior linebacker for the Santa Barbara 5-1 football team, registered a sack and made numerous tackles in the head of a defense that contained Lompoc’s remarkable running back Sheldon Canley Jr., in a 44-38 win in the Channel League opener at Lompoc.

The victory was the fifth in a row for the Dons.

Men’s Honorable Mention picks for this week’s award include Ethan Dwelley (San Marcos cross country), Abel Renteria (Santa Barbara High football and previous winner) and Finn Ballard McBride (UCSB football).

The honorable mention female picks were Heidi Hatton (Santa Barbara High tennis) and Anna DiSorbo (Cate cross country).

Coaches are encouraged to submit entries for Athlete of the Week. Submissions should be sent to [email protected] Sunday at 10 a.m.

The athlete of the week awards are sponsored by the law firm Maho-Prentice.
