Powell and Brown named NCAC Athletes of the Week
GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 2, 2022) – Denison University Athletics won two North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards for the week ending Sunday, May 1. Claire Powell was named Softball Player of the Week for the second time this season as Jacob Brown was also Male Field Athlete of the Week for the second time.
Claire Powell, a senior from Richmond, Va., hit .435 in a 4-2 week for the Big Red. She finished the week with 10 hits, six runs scored and five RBIs, was a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts while adding three triples, and also had four multi-hit games this week. Powell was combined 5-8 at Wittenberg on Tuesday with a run scored in both games. She then went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs in Game 1 against Muskingum on Thursday, and was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple in Game 1 at Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
Jacob Brown, a sophomore from Dover, Massachusetts, placed first overall in the decathlon at the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Championship, posting a new Denison School record score of 6,092 points. Brown won in five (long jump, shot put, 100-meter hurdles, javelin throw, 1,500-meter run) of 10 events and set four new personal bests (100-meter sprint, shot put, 110-meter hurdles , 1,500 meter race) as Good. In the end, Brown’s point total broke a Denison school record that stood for 19 years, surpassing the mark of 5,712 points set by Andy Stomwall in 2003.
