Shillong: The fourth edition of the Meghalaya Games will be held from May 2 to 6, the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) announced, adding that this edition will be the biggest to date, gathering more than 2,600 athletes in 19 disciplines.
There were around 1,500 athletes in 14 disciplines last time, in 2020.
The Meghalaya Games are the state’s flagship sporting event and the MSOA has expressed its gratitude to the state government, which is contributing Rs 2.23 crore for the games. “We thank the government of Meghalaya for supporting the Games so that the young athletes will benefit and help us to produce champions in the future at the national and international levels,” the incumbent president of the MSOA told reporters on Friday. John F Kharshiing.
He added that it was a groundbreaking decision by the current government to bring the mega-event back in 2020, some 16 years after the Games were last held.
“We must bear in mind that this year’s Games will take place against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has disrupted the lives of our athletes. We see such enthusiasm from all districts to participate and the Games will only get bigger with time as the state government is committed to holding them regularly,” Kharshiing said.
In 2020, the third edition was mainly held at the JN Sports Complex. This year, with ongoing renovations, most of the events will take place at the Sports Authority of India complex on one of the campuses of North-Eastern Hill University, which will also host the closing ceremony. The opening ceremony will take place at the Shillong Sports Association Stadium at First Ground, Polo on May 3.
