Lions trio win Southland All-Academic tryouts
HAMMOND, Louisiana – Jalyn Hinton, Ryan Burkhardt and strange matthew have been named to the 2022 Southland Conference Men’s All-Academic Basketball Team for Southeastern Louisiana University, the league office announced Thursday morning.
Hinton, selected to the first team on Thursday, continues to fill out his resume with playoff accolades. The Boston native was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was awarded second-team All-Southland honors last month. A business administration major, Hinton compiled a 3.2 GPA with his stellar play on the court, scoring 13.8 points and grabbing 8.0 rebounds per game. Hinton was also ranked on the Southland Conference All-Tournament Team, averaging 11.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 6.5 blocked shots over the two games.
Burkhardt, of St. Augustine, Fla., also received first-team recognition. The Lions sniper finished the year with a 3.30 sports management GPA to earn his spot on Thursday’s squad. Burkhardt led the team in three-pointers with 82, which was second in Southland. The transfer from North Florida tied the program record for most games played in a season (34) with former Lions Marlain Veal and Keith Charleston from the 2017-18 season.
Strange, a redshirt junior, set the Lions all-time program record for three-point percentage in a season. The Woodlands, Texas native shot 46.2% (30 for 65) from long range, surpassing John Picou’s 27-year-old record of 45.6% (36 for 79) set in the 1994-95 season . Strange racked up a 3.25 GPA while majoring in business administration.
UIW’s Josh Morgan has won the 2022 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year award.
Burkhardt and Hinton were joined by UNO’s Derek St. Hilaire, HBU’s Zion Tordoff and UIW’s Brandon Swaby in the first team. Strange was joined by Thomas Zevgaras and Godsgift Ezedinma of UIW, Johan Zelenbaba of Northwestern State and Tyrease Terrell of LaTerrance Reed and Nicholls.
