It’s time for John Elway to make more room on the mantle for another all-time accolade.
Marking 45 years covering preseason sports in Southern California, Los Angeles Times columnist Eric Sondheimer on Friday posted a list of his 13 top high school athletes he has covered in the region.
And right at the top of the exclusive list is # 7 – or, as it was known during high school days in Granada Hills, # 11.
Sondheimer remembers Elway leading his high school baseball team to the City Division title in 1979 at Dodger Stadium after becoming the country’s top quarterback prospect and before moving to Stanford.
Elway, famous for the Cardinal on the Diamond as well, threatened to turn to professional baseball if the Baltimore Colts did not trade him after being selected No.1 overall in the 1983 NFL Draft.
âThe Dukeâ would eventually land in Denver with the Broncos, and three Super Bowl championships later (two players and one as an executive), the rest is history.
Some of the players Elway beat for the top spot included New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, two-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen, Olympic runners Allyson Felix and Marion Jones, and hoop stars Cheryl Miller. and Russell Westbrook.
