China to field biggest Winter Olympics team of 176 athletes in Beijing
BEIJING — China will field the country’s largest contingent of 176 athletes when it hosts the Beijing Winter Olympics next month, state broadcaster CCTV reported Thursday.
Coached by a legion of foreigners, the Chinese team will compete in all sports at the Winter Olympics for the first time from Feb. 4-20.
China’s guaranteed spot as the host country for men’s ice hockey had been questioned due to concerns over the team’s competitiveness, but they were cleared to play in December.
Of the 78 Chinese coaches, 51 are foreigners from countries such as the United States, Canada, Russia, France and Japan.
