2022 NFL Coaching Carousel Tracker: Judge, Flores, Nagy, Zimmer out; updates, breaking news, layoff rumors

By on January 11, 2022 0

The NFL coaching carousel is upon us with the end of the regular season, as many teams will begin to make decisions about the future of their franchise. The Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars began the process of finding their next coach this season with the in-season layoffs of Jon Gruden and Urban Meyer. (Jacksonville has already started the process of finding its next head coach.)

The Denver Broncos wasted no time sacking Vic Fangio, making them the third team looking for a new head coach in 2022. The Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears are two other teams who have made a decision about their coaches. by Mike Zimmer and Matt Nagy, respectively.

With all of the coaches on the move in the NFL, we will be tracking every layoff in the league (and which coaches get retained). To stay on top of the latest layoffs, rumors, and hires, be sure to keep an eye out for the coaching tracker below.

  • Fired: Joe judge
  • Hiring: To be determined

Judge was a disappointing 10-23 in his two seasons as a head coach and looked like his job would be secure, at least until the Giants hired a new GM, but the Giants let go of the hammer Tuesday night.

The Giants are now on the hunt for a new general manager and head coach after missing the playoffs for five consecutive seasons.

  • Fired: Brian Flores
  • Hiring: To be determined

Flores has never made the playoffs in three seasons in Miami, but he will be one of the most sought after candidates in this hiring cycle. He’s the only head coach to start a season 1-7 and finish with a winning record (2021), as the Dolphins have gone 24-25 in his three seasons – with two winning campaigns. Flores has gone 24-18 in his last 42 games as a head coach.

Flores’ sacking is the most surprising of this head coach cycle, even though the Dolphins have never had a ranked offense above 22 in his three seasons at the helm. Miami has quarterback uncertainty with Tua Tagovailoa and a bad offensive line, a task the next head coach will have to inherit. Flores has outperformed her performances in Miami, despite attempts by the Dolphins to build up draft capital and missing free agent signings over the past three years.

  • Fired: Mike zimmer
  • Hiring: To be determined

The Vikings fired Zimmer on Monday after eight seasons at the helm of the franchise. While Zimmer finished 72-56-1 during his tenure, the Vikings were just 15-18 over the past two seasons and have failed to advance to the playoffs both seasons. Minnesota are just 33-31 since losing in the NFC Championship game in the 2017 season, having the 27th ranked defense in 2020 and the 30th ranked defense in 2021.

Minnesota have a Kirk Cousins quarterback and a powerful offense, but Cousins has a cap of $ 45 million for 2022. The Vikings’ next head coach will be tasked with fixing a defense that has been the one of the worst in the NFL. past two years and how to deal with the Cousins’ situation (which will be the job of the next GM going forward, as Rick Spielman was fired as well).

  • Fired: Matt nagy
  • Hiring: To be determined

The Bears left Nagy after four seasons at the helm of the franchise, with Nagy finishing 34-31 with just one losing season (2021). Nagy led the Bears to the NFC North title in his first season and won the Coach of the Year award, but has only gone 20-27 since. He was tasked with developing quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, but the Bears left him despite the playoffs in two of Trubisky’s three seasons as a starting quarterback.

Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace traded and drafted Justin Fields, only for Andy Dalton to replace him to start the season as Fields struggled to develop. The Bears have a top ten defense in allowed yards, but the next head coach will be tasked with mending a talented and broken offense. Fields is a good centerpiece for a coach who enjoys developing quarterbacks.

  • Fired: Vic Fangio
  • Hiring: To be determined

The Broncos fired Fangio after he failed to get them in the playoffs after three seasons in Denver, compiling a 19-30 record during his tenure. Denver hasn’t made the playoffs in six seasons and is still looking for the franchise quarterback the team hasn’t had since Peyton Manning.

Fangio built a solid defense in Denver, but general manager George Paton bought low on Teddy Bridgewater in the hopes Denver would finish with a record-winning record and compete for the playoffs. Bridgewater’s experience didn’t last, but Denver has a talented roster that could compete for the AFC West with a much better caller. Denver already has Dan Quinn as a candidate for its next head coach, with more candidates expected to be revealed in the coming days.

  • Fired: Jon gruden
  • Hiring: To be determined

Gruden was the first head coach to be sacked after a series of emails were published in connection with an investigation into the Washington soccer team, which included racist, homophobic and sexist emails sent by Gruden. The Raiders went with interim head coach Rich Bisaccia for the remainder of the season. Bisaccia is 7-5 and has Vegas in the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

The Raiders’ job will be attractive if Bisaccia isn’t selected, and the team may look to Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Vegas may later start looking for its head coach since the Raiders reached the playoffs.

  • Fired: Urban Meyer
  • Hiring: To be determined

The Jaguars sacked Meyer 13 games in his debut season after a string of incidents that led to his dismissal. Interim head coach Darrell Bevell has played the last four games for the Jaguars, who have already started the process of finding a head coach. The Jaguars have interviewed Doug Pederson, Todd Bowles, Jim Caldwell, Byron Leftwich and Kellen Moore over the past two weeks – and also plan to interview Bill O’Brien.

With Trevor Lawrence and the first overall pick, the Jaguars position will be attractive.
